EMDR: Healing Trauma

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic technique used to help individuals process and reduce the intensity of traumatic memories. Through a structured process involving eye movements, EMDR connects you to distressing memories while simultaneously guiding you through reprocessing them, helping you to reduce their emotional impact.

Self-Administered EMDR Process Traumatic Memories Safely

The Habit Of Care app allows users to engage in self-administered EMDR by following a structured process that includes identifying traumatic memories, visualizing them, and using eye movements to reduce their emotional intensity. The process is broken down into several steps that guide users through reprocessing their negative experiences.

During the session, users are prompted to visualize the most distressing part of their memory and connect it to the negative beliefs associated with it. The app then asks users to consider a positive belief they would prefer to hold, helping reframe the memory in a healthier way.

For example, a negative belief like "I am powerless" might be reframed as "I have control over my life."

The core of EMDR involves following bilateral eye movements (e.g., tracking a circle on the screen) while holding the memory and negative beliefs in mind. This method helps to stimulate communication between the brain’s hemispheres and reduce the intensity of the negative memory.

Users are guided to follow the moving circle on the screen while staying focused on their memory and associated feelings.

Bilateral Stimulation Reduce Emotional Intensity

Throughout the EMDR session, users are asked to evaluate the intensity of their feelings and beliefs on a scale of 1 to 7. This helps track progress and allows users to see how their emotional responses change as they work through their memories.

For instance, if a negative feeling starts at 7 (very strong), users can track how it decreases as the session progresses.

While self-administered EMDR can be done independently, providers can also assign EMDR tasks to clients and track their progress. By reviewing changes in the intensity of negative emotions and beliefs, providers can monitor the effectiveness of the sessions and offer guidance when needed. This collaborative approach ensures that clients are supported throughout their trauma-healing journey.

Provider Dashboard Monitor Client Progress in Trauma Healing

While EMDR can be an effective self-help tool, it’s important to acknowledge the potential for triggering negative reactions when recalling traumatic memories. The Habit Of Care app recommends that clients consult with a mental health professional before engaging in self-administered EMDR. Users should always prioritize their well-being and seek help if they feel overwhelmed during the process.
